Matrix RMs for Contaminants and Toxic Elements in Food and Water Now Available for Sale

The Metrology in Chemistry (MiC) Section of the National Metrology Laboratory (NML) is tasked to disseminate the metrological traceability of chemical measurements in the country. Reference materials (RMs) for food and water produced by MiC are now available for use as materials for method validation and quality control. The reference values of the measurands are accuracy-based values obtained using higher-order methods.

DOST-ITDI concludes 2021 Tech Offering: Halal Personal Care

Earlier today, December 14, 2021, ITDI concluded this year's technology offering themed as “LET’S TALK JAMIL: Halal Personal Care (Exploring the Muslim World of Beauty)."

Showcased in the offering were Halal-compliant personal care products such as moisturizing lipstick, lip balm, whitening toothpaste, moisturizing and whitening soap, and shampoo with hair-growing properties which were formulated by the Standards and Testing Division's (STD-ITDI) research team led by its former chief, Dr. Rosalinda C. Torres.

Earlier today, August 12, 2021, Dr. Zorayda Vazquez Ang took her oath to office as the new Deputy Director for Administrative and Technical Services of DOST-ITDI.

MATDEV rolls out new AM services

Inaugurated late last year, the Materials Development Laboratory or MATDEV has started rolling out its additive manufacturing services after its introduction to the public on March 25, 2021.

Riding on the wheels of novelty, MATDEV proposes an energy-efficient and waste-reducing technology. It employs the technology of additive manufacturing (AM), which is how objects are created in 3D printing. It is called additive manufacturing because the build process adds instead of subtracts raw material.

A Hub for Eco-sustainable R&D with MMIC

Inaugurated in February 2021, the Modular Multi-industry Innovation Center (MMIC), dubbed as InnoHub sa Pinas, is the innovation hub catering for product development for the food and pharma-neutraceutical industries. It is a collaboration between ITDI’s Chemicals and Energy Division (CED) and Food Processing Division, offering state-of-the-art equipment under three R&D lines: Nut and Seed Oils Line, Mix Blend Powders Line, and Liquids and Emulsions Line. These equipment may be used in research and development on various innovative products and processes.

Abaca fiber-reinforced boat to set sail

The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) developed an abaca fiber-reinforced composite material. It is a green composite material from abaca fiber mixed with the polymeric resin used in producing parts/accessories for the different modes of transportation.

In developing the technology, DOST-ITDI utilized vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) or resin infusion process, an innovative technique in fabricating abaca fiber-reinforced composites in more complex structures for different transport modes such as tricycle roof, fuselage for drones, and boat body.

ITDI Director Briones joins ranks of 2021 Asian Scientist 100

Once again ITDI Director Dr. Annabelle V. Briones brought honor to DOST and the Philippines with her joining the ranks of the 2021 Edition Asian Scientist 100. She received the recognition for designing a mosquito ovicidal/larvicidal trap system aimed at reducing population of second-generation dengue mosquitos in the country. She also received the 2020 Gregorio Y. Zara Award for Applied Science Research last year for the same project.

CENMACO signs up to filter wastewater in fruit plant

The Central Macaroni Co. Inc. (CENMACO), known for the tropical fruits beverage brands Gina and Luzona, is working with the Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) and DOST-NCR the setting up and operate a trickling filter system for the removal of nitrates and phosphates in its wastewater.

DOST contends with Philippine Halal issues

Following a longer pause than expected after WHO declared the COVID-19 disease in 2020 as a pandemic, DOST is visibly boosting efforts on its Halal S&T Program to overcome issues attendant to the industry. DOST-ITDI develops nanoclay from bentonite ore

Some of the products derived from nanoclay are biodegradable nanocomposite films for green packaging (food and cutleries); halloysite nanoclay-filled epoxy molding compound for integrated circuit packaging; recycled polycarbonate-layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSN); local bioactive polymer nanofibrous scaffold for tissue engineering; and nanostructures fibrous membrane for wastewater treatment.

Emergency Disinfection System ensures potable drinking water

The DOST-ITDI developed an Emergency Disinfection System (EDS), which helps ensure the availability of potable drinking water during flooding, earthquakes, typhoons, and other catastrophes. With EDS, water-borne illnesses can be prevented, and chances of survival may increase.

ITDI signed the pact with Lozada Machineries Corporation (LMC), a private company engaged in fabrication of machines/equipment. The licensing engagement is part of ITDI’s promotional strategies which aims to increase the number of local fabricators thus decreasing national dependence on imported equipment.

The Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) introduces mungbean-coco drink, a refreshing non-dairy, nutritious drink developed from mungbean or monggo and infused with coconut cream for an alternative drink lactose-intolerant consumers.


DOST-ITDI develops isotonic drink for rehydration

The drink helps prevent dehydration, maintains the body’s balance of electrolytes, and supplies energy during or after heavy physical activities. It utilizes coconut water which is very rich in potassium, and contains a considerable amount of sodium, magnesium, and chloride.

ITDI has new Deputy Director for Research

Dr. Christine Marie Capule Montesa is DOST-ITDI’s new Deputy Director for Research and Development. A local of Quezon City, the 47-year old licensed chemical engineer will be formally sworn in before DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña on April 15, 2021.

InnoHub sa Pinas is an industrial processing facility with multifunctional/multi-application modular unit operation equipment that can be retrofitted to accommodate different manufacturing lines.

It is built to serve the needs of the food, personal care, and pharma-nutraceutical industries using its three main processing lines for nut/ seed and oils, mix blend powder, and liquids/emulsions which rely mainly on by-products of commercial operations as raw material.

AMCen-MATDEV Evaluates Air Filter Alternatives for UST Hospitals Ventilators

The UST Hospital sought the help of the AMCen-MATDEV Team of the DOST-ITDI in evaluating the characteristics of alternative types of air filtration materials for their respirators. This was to determine which among the available air filter alternatives has the closest characteristics or performance to the type of filter the hospital typically uses in their respirators and ventilators – critical instruments given this COVID-19 crisis.


DOST-ITDI Develops Respirator, Ventilator Parts for Covid-19 Patients

The MATDEV (Multiple Materials Platform for Additive Manufacturing Project) Team, using Fused Deposition Modeling and Markforged Mark Two 3D printers developed the prototype to assist hospitals as they easily run out of respirator valves. These valves connect patients in intensive care to breathing machines.  


DOST-ITDI expands distribution of RTE foods/drinks in NCR, other regions

Some 7,000 packets of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods and drinks were distributed by DOST-ITDI to cities in Manila and three other regions as the country continues to fight off the COVID-19 pandemic. Undeterred by the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) now in place in Luzon island, DOST-ITDI continues to provide interventions to help our countrymen cope with the challenges as we battle this pandemic. 

DOST-ITDI helps fight COVID-19 with 3D printed face shields

In response to this national emergency, the DOST-ITDI Director Dr. Annabelle V. Briones, through MATDEV Team Leader and Chief of the Materials Science Division (MSD-ITDI) Dr. Blessie A. Basilia, produced 3D printed face shield holders based on Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Technology. This technique enables the fabrication of optimized face shield digital design using thermoplastic filaments.

At a time when most of us are staying at home for safety due to COVID-19, a team from DOST-ITDI’s (Industrial Technology Development Institute) Packaging Technology Division (PTD) braved the streets and their safety last March 26, 2020 and delivered relief foods we call “Pack of Hope” which means that in every pack is a hope to address hunger.

DOST-ITDI was visited by a technology taker seemingly inspired with an idea that has been brewing in her mind for quite a while – that is, to improve her product and hopefully, widen its reach and create its own market niche.  


The ITDI is among the instrumentalities that laid the groundwork, in the early years, for S&T in the country. Today, it is one of the DOST's RDIs (research and development institutes) and undertakes multidisciplinary industrial R&D, technical services, and knowledge translation or technology transfer and commercialization.
